Festivity of Saint Mark the Evangelist - April 25

Venetians used to sanctify the 25th of April far before that date became the actual National Holiday of Italy liberation. April the 25th is the holiday of the Patron Saint of the city, whose relic was transferred in Venice in the year 828 by two Venetian merchants, and who became their Patron Saint and emblema under the shape of the winged lion, and whose death dates April 25th.

Today the commemoration takes place into a St. Mark's Square full of Venetians and of representatives of all ancient Brotherhoods, dressed with typical coats.

Saint Mark Festival is also the Festival of the Blooming Rose , because Venetians males use to gift the bocolo (red rose bloom) to their beloved.

In occasion of the Fest of the Patron Saint, the Basilica is closed to regular visits, and during the sumptuous Mass it is possible to admire the Pala d'Oro turned towards the entrance, in all its beauty.

La Vogalonga - May 19, 2013

The Vogalonga is a splendid, fun and thoroughly worthy event which takes place once a year in Venice and its lagoon. It's held on a Sunday morning in May or June. Like a protest, a get-together and a non-competitive race rolled into one, this is an event where rowers take over the lagoon and canals. They oust the destructive motorboats which churn up the fragile lagoon ecosystem and damage Venice's buildings, and for one morning the peace is disturbed only by the slap of oars, the shouts and songs of rowing teams and the applause of enthusiastic spectators.
